How a drive works
Two windows, one forest.
Wildlife is most active at the edges of the day. A typical Mukundra safari lasts about three hours and covers roughly 20 kilometres of permitted forest road — exact distance and reporting time follow the day’s permit.
Morning drives start in the cool, when tracks are fresh and birds are loud. Evening drives catch golden light on the ridges and the first movement toward water. Both are worth doing if you have two days in Kota.

Mukundra is not one loop. Which gate you use depends on permits, season and what you want to see. These are the landscapes we most often talk through with guests travelling from Kota, Bundi, Jhalawar and Rawatbhata.
Darrah & Gagron
Dense dhok forest, leopard and bear country
Older woodland, a British-era rest-house atmosphere, and tracks that suit leopard, sloth bear and deer. A good first safari if you want classic jungle rather than open views.
Rawatha
Grassland, nilgai, chinkara and birds
More sky, more grazing ground, temple remnants and rock art on some approaches. Photographers like the light; birders like the openness.
Bhainsrodgarh country
Gorges, caves and the long circuit
The dramatic day: ravines, waterfall country and a sense of scale you do not get on a short Kota morning drive. Best when you can spare a full day.
Chambal water
Boat stretches when they are open
A different safari: turtles, mugger, gharial, otters and river birds. Operated only where the department allows, and worth pairing with a jeep if you have two days.
